Plastic poison while pregnant, Triggers Aggressive Children

Exposure to chemicals found in everyday tableware during pregnancy can cause behavioral and emotional problems later in life. The chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) affect aggression in girls as they mature.

The chemical BPA, commonly used as plastic packaging and bottles, as well as layers in food packaging cans. This chemical is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The author Joe Braun, a researcher in the field of environmental health at the Harvard School of Public Health in the U.S., said, "This study confirms two previous studies that showed that exposure to BPA during the child in the womb is more important than exposure after birth," she said as published by the Telegraph.

The team collected urine samples from 244 mothers during pregnancy, during delivery and then compare it with the urine samples of their children at age 1-3 years.

"No child had clinically abnormal behavior, but some children have more behavior problems than others. Thus, we examined the relationship between mothers and children BPA concentrations and different behaviors," he said.

BPA is found in 85 percent of urine samples of mothers and more than 96 percent of the sample of children.

The researchers found that maternal BPA concentrations similar to the samples taken and the first time during delivery. BPA levels in children aged 1-3 decreased, but higher and more variable than their mothers.

After adjusting for other trigger factors, higher BPA concentrations was associated with hyperactive behavior, aggression, anxiety, and depression, and lack of emotional control in girls. Same effect was seen in boys.

Braun stated, further research is needed to understand the health effects of BPA exposure in infants in the womb. He advised pregnant women to minimize chemical exposure by avoiding canned and packaged foods.
