Magnet Communications Help Stroke Patients

Stimulating the brain with magnets can improve language skills of stroke patients. It was proven through research that led Caroline Barwood from the University of Queensland's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

In a study published in The European Journal of Neurology, the increasing language skills in stroke patients, who underwent Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

TMS is a method of brain stimulation targeting activity to regulate the behavior of language-related areas. The method is done by placing the coils on the head that uses electromagnetic power to induce weak electric currents.

Researchers involved a group of patients who experienced a stroke within the range of one to six years. "80 percent of patients who undergo TMS therapy showed improvement in language skills, particularly in expressive language, which includes naming, repetition, and discourse," said Barwood.

While patients who undergo therapy or placebo fake TMS showed no improvement related language skills. "This study strongly suggests that TMS may be a method of treatment is very useful and safe," he added.

Magnets Prevent Heart Attack
The risk of heart attack increases with blood vessel damage caused by conditions which are too thick. Despite the blood-thinning medications commonly prescribed by doctors, Professor Rongjia Tao from Temple University in Michigan found a way of diluting the blood with a magnet.

After conducting laboratory tests on blood samples, Tao found that the effect of the magnetic field will polarize the red blood cells that are interconnected and form a short chain. Because the chain is larger than a single blood cells, they move more freely. The effects can decrease blood viscosity.

"By choosing a suitable magnetic field strength and determine the duration of therapy, we will be able to control the size of blood cells that form chains and automatically controlling the viscosity of blood," he said. "Juxtapose the magnetic field on blood vessels to reduce blood viscosity 20-30 percent."
